Deleted mail waits in Trash for 30 days.

Trash

Search skips Trash.

Auto-delete rules skip Trash. See Auto-delete.

Drafts skip Trash. Deleting one is permanent.

Restore

Restore marks the email as read.

Delete forever

To empty Trash, select every row and choose Delete forever.

Archive

Archiving keeps a rule's Auto-delete date.

Unarchive

Unarchive marks the email as read.

If a rule keeps moving mail to Trash or Archive, edit the rule from the email's Inbox settings.
