Inboxes
Each address you hand out becomes its own inbox. How they show up, how to find them, how rules attach to them.
Most email apps have one inbox. Jade has as many as you want, one per address you've handed out. This page is about what that means in practice.
What "inbox" means here
In Jade an inbox is one email address. [email protected] is an inbox. [email protected] is a different inbox. The mail collected at each address lives under that inbox; they don't mix unless you ask them to (in a category view, in search, or in the Everything view).
You'll sometimes see "address" used in casual writing. Treat them as synonyms. Inbox is the noun this app standardizes on because each address really is its own collection of mail with its own rules and settings.
Inboxes show up automatically
You don't create an inbox before mail arrives at it. The flow is:
- You hand out an address
Type a new local part into a sign-up form. The full address is
[email protected]. Send it. Nothing happens on Jade's side yet. The inbox doesn't appear until activity actually starts. - The first email arrives
Confirmation email, welcome message, whatever. Jade routes any mail to a local part under one of your verified domains into an inbox identified by that local part.
- The inbox appears in your list
Open Settings → Inboxes. The new one is there, sorted by most recent activity. From here on the inbox behaves like any other.
This is why you almost never need to "create an inbox" as a deliberate action. The inbox follows the mail.
An inbox in Jade is identified by its local part, the bit before the @. If
you own both a.com and b.com, mail to [email protected] and [email protected]
lands in the same dentist inbox. The domains you own are interchangeable
at the inbox level; what makes two inboxes distinct is the local part, not the
domain.
The Inboxes page
Inboxes under Settings lists every inbox you have, ordered by most recent activity at the top. Each row shows the address and when mail last arrived. The search at the top filters by address.
Per-inbox rules
Every inbox has its own rules page. Open Settings → Inboxes, pick one, and click into its settings. When you're reading an email, the gear on its inbox badge jumps straight to the same page. You can:
- Add rules that apply only to mail arriving at this inbox.
- Attach one or more rule sets, which are reusable rule bundles defined once and shared across many inboxes.
- See the merged chain, with direct rules and rule-set rules in execution order, and reorder it.

Sending from an inbox
You can choose any of your inboxes as the sender when composing, and you can pick a brand-new local part on the fly, even one no inbox exists for yet. The Sending email guide covers the composer.
