# Glossary

Terms used across the app, each linking back to the guide where it lives.

## Address

A specific email address you've handed out, like `netflix@yourdomain.com`. In Jade's UI, "address" and **inbox** are usually interchangeable. See [Inboxes](https://jade.email/help/inboxes.md).

## Archive

Archived mail lives in Archive in the sidebar, outside your everyday mail views. Archiving doesn't itself schedule deletion, but rules can combine **Archived** status with **Auto-delete**. See [Trash and archive](https://jade.email/help/trash-and-archive.md).

## Bounce

A rule action that sends a nondelivery response saying the mailbox doesn't exist. Jade keeps the received copy; enabling **Bounce** in the editor selects **Deleted** if no status is selected. The response is available only within 24 hours of receipt. See [Bounce rules](https://jade.email/help/rules.md#bounce).

## Category

A colored grouping that mail is sorted into. It cuts across inboxes, so one category can hold mail from many inboxes. The colored bar on the left of every email row is its category color. See [Categories](https://jade.email/help/categories.md).

## DKIM

A set of CNAME records that publish the public keys Jade uses to sign outgoing mail. Receiving servers verify the signature to confirm the mail really came from your domain. See [Domains and DNS](https://jade.email/help/domains.md).

## DMARC

A DNS record (TXT) that tells receiving servers what to do with mail that fails SPF or DKIM checks. Jade's default policy is `quarantine`. See [Domains and DNS](https://jade.email/help/domains.md).

## DNS

The domain name system is the global lookup service that maps domain names to mail servers, web servers, and so on. You configure DNS at your registrar to point your domain at Jade for mail handling. See [Domains and DNS](https://jade.email/help/domains.md).

## Domain

The part after the `@` in an email address. Domains are owned (you register one or more), and every inbox in Jade lives under a domain you own. See [Domains and DNS](https://jade.email/help/domains.md).

## Draft

An unsent message the composer saves automatically as you write. Drafts live under Drafts in the sidebar and open back into the composer. They sync with IMAP clients' Drafts folders, and discarding one deletes it permanently, because drafts skip the trash. See [Sending email](https://jade.email/help/sending-email.md).

## Entri

The service Jade uses for in-app domain purchases (the **Buy another domain** flow in Settings → Domains). Entri brokers the purchase through its registrar partners. Entri configures DNS automatically when you buy through it. See [Domains and DNS](https://jade.email/help/domains.md).

## Everything

The unified view that shows mail from every inbox, in every non-hidden category. Open it from Emails in the sidebar. The name is reserved, so you can't create a custom category named Everything. See [Reading and managing email](https://jade.email/help/reading-email.md).

## Forwarding address

A verified destination that rules can send a copy of matching mail to with the **Forward to** action. Add and verify addresses under Settings → **Forwarding**, then any rule can forward to them. See [Forwarding](https://jade.email/help/settings.md#forwarding).

## IMAP

A standard protocol for reading mail from a server. Jade lets you create per-inbox IMAP credentials so you can connect Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or any other IMAP-capable client. Per-inbox by design, so there's no account-wide IMAP login. See [Settings](https://jade.email/help/settings.md).

## Inbox

In Jade, one collection of mail identified by a single local part. If you own multiple domains, mail to that local part on any of them lands in the same inbox. An inbox shows up in your list automatically the first time it has activity. See [Inboxes](https://jade.email/help/inboxes.md).

## Local part

The bit before the `@` in an email address, such as `dentist` in `dentist@yourdomain.com`. The local part is the inbox's identity in Jade; the domain part is interchangeable across the domains you own.

## MCP

Model Context Protocol. A standard for connecting AI assistants to external systems. Jade exposes a single remote MCP endpoint for reading and searching mail, inspecting attachments, organizing messages and categories, managing inbox rules and reusable rule sets, and sending, replying to, or forwarding email. ## MX record

A DNS record that tells the rest of the world which servers should receive mail for your domain. Without MX records pointing at Jade, mail can't arrive. See [Domains and DNS](https://jade.email/help/domains.md).

## OAuth

The standard for letting third-party applications access your Jade account without sharing your password. Jade's remote MCP endpoint uses OAuth so connected assistants such as Claude can read and act on your mail on your behalf. See [Connecting an AI assistant (MCP)](https://jade.email/help/mcp.md).

## Pin

A status that floats an email to the top of every list view. Set it from the bulk action bar, which appears when you select rows, from a row swipe on a phone, or from the pin button when reading a message. Pinned mail stays pinned until you unpin it.

## Pinned / Unread / Read

The three sections every list view organizes mail into, in that order. See [Reading and managing email](https://jade.email/help/reading-email.md).

## Push notification

A device alert triggered by **Send a push notification** in a matching rule. Enable it on each device under Settings → **Notifications**. Jade attempts the action once per email, and that attempt can notify every eligible enabled installation. See [Notifications](https://jade.email/help/notifications.md).

## Quarantine

Inbound mail that fails a virus, spam, or sender-authentication check is held in Quarantine in the sidebar. Held mail is invisible everywhere else and deleted permanently after 30 days; **Release** delivers an email into your mail views as if it had just arrived. This is distinct from the `quarantine` disposition in a [DMARC](https://jade.email/help/domains.md) policy. That record asks *other* receivers to do the same for mail claiming to be from your domain. ## Rule

A condition and one or more actions that run when the condition matches an email. Choose **Every email** or match text in **Subject**, **Sender**, **Body**, **Headers**, or **Recipient domain**. Actions set a category or status, unsubscribe, bounce, send a push notification, or schedule automatic deletion. See [Rules and rule sets](https://jade.email/help/rules.md).

## Rule set

A reusable group of rules, called a **Ruleset** in settings. Edits apply to future mail in every inbox where it's attached; use **Reprocess** to apply them to existing mail. The default ruleset attaches when a new inbox receives its first email. Changing the default doesn't change existing inboxes' attachments. ## Screening

A per-domain setting. Mail to an address that has never received mail at that domain waits in Screening. You screen each address in or out. See [Screening](https://jade.email/help/screening.md).

## SPF

A DNS record (TXT) that declares which servers are allowed to send mail for your domain. Without SPF, recipients can't easily verify outgoing mail is really from you. See [Domains and DNS](https://jade.email/help/domains.md).

## Stop after this rule

A per-rule flag that halts the rule chain after the rule fires. The stopping rule's own actions still run; anything below it in the chain won't. The standard way to "lock in" a decision so a broader later rule doesn't override it.

## Status

What state an email is in. **new** (unread), **read**, **pinned**, **deleted**, **archived**. Pin/unpin, mark read/unread, archive, and delete run from the bulk action bar or a row swipe. Deleted mail lives under Trash and archived mail under Archive in the sidebar. See [Trash and archive](https://jade.email/help/trash-and-archive.md).

## Trash

Deleted mail waits in Trash in the sidebar. Anything in the trash can be restored for 30 days; after that it's permanently deleted. Drafts are the exception: discarding a draft skips the trash. See [Trash and archive](https://jade.email/help/trash-and-archive.md).

## Verification

The status of a domain in Settings → **Domains**, indicating whether DNS records are correctly in place. Each domain shows two statuses, **Sending** (the DKIM records) and **Receiving** (the MX record), because the two depend on different records and can work independently. Each reads ready, not set up, blocked, checking, or unconfirmed. See [Domains and DNS](https://jade.email/help/domains.md).
